Hello and Welcome!

I'm Ingrid. Thanks for stopping by! Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my work.

My work is about connection.

The connection between people, with the spaces we find ourselves in, and with the connection that we have with our own innermost selves. I am interested in how this feeling of connection can be felt as a sense of knowing - one that is not attached to reason or language, but can be heard louder than words if we listen.

I have always been a creative person, and in addition to being a professional violinist and music educator, I have always loved making things. For as long as I can remember, I've created with ink, paint, fiber, clay, and anything else that I could get my hands on. I turned to abstract art seriously in 2020 when my career as a violinist was put on hold due to the pandemic. Like music, it allowed me to tap into my emotions in a way that doesn’t require explanation, rationalization, or justification. Not even to myself.

I use color, shapes, and texture to create a feeling. I work intuitively, and rarely have a preconceived idea about what the finished painting will look like. My ink and watercolor works often start with a scribble or a single line, and I am always thrilled to see it develop into an urban scene, flowers, a silly robot, or something else I would have never thought to draw!

My process for starting a new painting is similar, and one of my favorite parts is when I'm just mark making with charcoal and drips of water on a huge empty canvas. I use intuition and feeling (and a lot of paint) to develop a direction for the work. I know it's finished when it feels right. Part of this process is learning to let go of an idea that’s not working, even if there are parts of it that I like. It’s learning to let go of any judgment, trusting that I will find my way.

Art can make us feel. I want my work to make people feel something. Something that they intuitively know, for which they don’t need to find the words.
